Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Bent Bulldog with Silver (5) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4179
Dunhill has intentionally kept their shape chart on the smaller, more narrow side — with one number defining one classic shape. The only differences between iterations come from the various Group sizes. For designs that stray outside their numbers, Dunhill offers the Quaint series, with shapes ranging from quite wild to more slight variants on traditional forms, like this bent Bulldog. The slightly bent stem is paired to a rather standard diamond shank and beadlined bowl combination, the stem and stummel separated by a band of sterling silver.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
