Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Rhodesian (5) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4181
Dunhill's Quaint series features designs that may be based off of traditional shape but don't readily align with Dunhill's standard pipe chart. This rendition of the Rhodesian likens itself considerably to the sinuous form of the Calabash — the Group 5 bowl is tall and tapered, softened by a simple ridgeline below the rim instead of the conventional beadlines. The transition elegantly into the bend stem, coinciding with the all-black color palette for quite the elegant and formally reserved presentation.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
