Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Bent Billiard (5) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4183
Defined by shapes that don't fit into Dunhill's concise shape chart, the Quaint series can feature quite unique designs or more subtle variations on classic shapes, as is the case with this bent Billiard. Obviously, this isn't Dunhill's standard "02" bent Billiard — the bend subtle and only evident at the stem, while the shank is pinched and oval of cross section. Such features lend even more visual weight to the already domineering bowl, which displays a soft taper toward the rim. Typically, Quaint pipes are presented in Dunhill's smaller group sizes, but this one boasts robust Group 5 dimensions of house pipe proportions.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
