Dunhill: Bruyere Quaint Belge (2) (2018)
Product Number: 002-015-4210
The Belge is an age-old pipe shape, dating back to when pipes were fashioned exclusively from clay, rendered in long, willowy proportions, and colloquially referred to as "tavern pipes." Despite the design's historical precedent, Dunhill doesn't include it in their standard shape chart, hence its place in the Quaint series — a designation denoting shapes that don't fit into the English marque's conventional lineup. This particular rendition features the characteristically canted bowl in Group 2 size fitted on the end of a streamlined stretch of shank and stem out back, and it's all dressed in the historic Bruyere finish.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.-Truett Smith
