Dunhill: Shell Briar with Silver Army Mount (3101)

Product Number: 002-015-4232

Dunhill's "01" straight Apple is a classic English take on the shape, and this particular offering is an excellent example and one of the marque's most unique renditions. In Group 3 size, the bowl is delightfully plump and has been paired to an abbreviated shank before giving way to a lengthy tapered stem, all while managing to keep the silhouette minimalist and streamlined. However, what really makes this example truly standout is the addition of the silver army mount, which allows this pipe to be broken down easily at any time to allow for easy storage or a quick cleaning, without having to fear damaging the shank. And when that bright silver is paired to the jet-black tones of the Shell Briar sandblast, you have a dress pipe that's both charming and highly practical.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
