Dunhill: Shell Briar (3105) (2018)
Product Number: 002-015-4233
This Group 3 rendition of Dunhill's classic "05" Dublin is decidedly ostentatious for the typically reserved English marque. Pitched forward at a cant, the bowl itself remains within Dunhill's classic œuvre, being conservative of taper. The transition and shank, though, are what set this piece apart — the transition is soft and curved, reminiscent of the Danish style, and the shank is pinched and slender in profile, accentuating the broadly flaring acrylic mount at the end. Though not as large as the bowl, the mount flares more drastically, drawing attention and adding quite the flourishing touch.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
