Dunhill: Shell Briar with Silver (3112) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4246
There seem to be two versions of this Dunhill "12" shape. Both are straight Billiards, but while one features a tall bowl of Stack proportions, the other — featured here — sports a similarly sized bowl but with the front half carved away, creating a protective "windshield." It makes for a unique profile but should help in keeping any oncoming breezes from snuffing out your flame. It also nods to Dunhill's beginnings when they manufactured motoring accessories, the windshield design meant to help pipesmokers enjoy a pipe while driving. Finished here in the marque's Shell Briar sandblast, this one bears an crisp accent of sterling silver.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
