Dunhill: William Shakespeare Cumberland with Silver (4114) (2014) (215/400)

Product Number: 002-015-4260

Ask people the world over to name someone English, and I'd wager the top answers would be either the Queen or William Shakespeare. His works have stood the test of time for centuries and been translated into just about every living written language. If one lives in the English-speaking world, you likely didn't get through high school (or some equivalent thereof) without reading at least one of his plays each year.

So, that said, it's about time the definitive English marque honored the legendary playwright — though granted they probably were just waiting for this, the 450th anniversary of his birth, to roll around. This special presentation has been produced in a limited edition of 400 pipes with this Group 4 "14" bent Dublin being serialized as number 215. It's here dressed in the Cumberland finish, accented with a sterling silver band engraved with William Shakespeare's signature and comes with a sterling tamper shaped to resemble a writing quill in an inkwell. It's offered here in an embossed leather presentation case with a relief bust of Shakespeare on the front and comes complete with its own unique certificate of authenticity.

When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
