Dunhill: Zodiac Pipe 2016 Shell Briar with Silver (3421) (190/388)
Product Number: 002-015-4265
In honor of the Chinese New Year, Dunhill has released a themed Zodiac Pipe every year since 2011. The Chinese calendar follows a 12-year cycle, with each year named for a certain animal. 2016 fell on the ninth year of the cycle and was designated by the Monkey. In accordance, Dunhill presented there classic "21" Zulu with a sterling silver accent band decorated with the image of the year's themed animal. Each is serialized out of 388 — this one being #190, but as the number four is unlucky is Chinese tradition, any number with that digit has been omitted, making for only 313 total pipes made.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
