Dunhill: Shell Briar Quaint Poker (3) (2018)

Product Number: 002-015-4271

Typically Dunhill's Quaint series is reserved for shapes that aren't designated by their standard shape chart. Sometimes that results in highly unique pieces, while others are more subtle variations. This Poker is one of those slightly altered variants — featuring the low-set transition of the "22" Poker with the bent stem of the "20" Cherrywood. The Group 3 bowl comes off as rather squat here, and the firmness of the cylindrical bowl is softened somewhat by the gently rounded rim.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
