Dunhill: Shell Briar with Horn (4103) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4275
Here we see a rather handsome rendition of Dunhill's classic "03" straight Billiard shape. Its high-rimmed bowl is paired with a rather short shank and topped with a horn mount. The elongated, slender push-style bit emphasizes the visual weight of the stummel. Overall, it's a lovely composition, and one that should break down easily should you need to stow it away in a hurry.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.- Andrew Wike
