Dunhill: Cumberland Quaint Paneled Billiard (1) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4299
Quite fitting for Dunhill's Quaint series, which showcases designs not otherwise seen on the English marque's standard shape chart, this paneled Billiard is somewhat of a departure from the more traditional forms we're used to seeing from such a classically inclined firm. The bowl wears a series of six neat, architectural panels across its surface, molding the rim into the shape of a hexagon with each side coming to a crisp, well-defined point. Such shaping cues allow for a firmer, sturdier feel in hand and showcases Dunhill's continual versatility when it comes to presenting shape chart standards in fresh and unique ways. I find it to be even more impressive when presented in smaller Group 1 proportions and dressed in the warm, rich tones of the Cumberland finish, with the rim left smooth for a subtle accenting touch.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."- Jeffery Sitts
