Dunhill: Shell Briar with Silver Cap (5101) (2016)
Product Number: 002-015-4334
In Group 5 size, this "01" Apple from Dunhill takes on quite a robust, muscular nature — not unlike the marque's "LB" Billiard. Filling the palm, it's a pipe of considerable substance and chamber depth, for those drawn to hearty renditions of shape chart standards. This particular piece is commended further by a sterling silver wind cap at the rim, effectively preventing rim charring as well as shielding your tobacco from outside elements.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
