Dunhill: Shell Briar with Silver (5104) (2018)
Product Number: 002-015-4335
In well-endowed Group 5 size, this "04" Bulldog from Dunhill boasts a strong, stolid presence, having traded overall length for some extra muscularity throughout the stummel. As for the shape, it's one of the English marque's taller Bulldog iterations, forward of cant and with a mid-set ridge in place of form's typical beadlines. It's a hearty take on the English classic, commended further by a trim accent of sterling silver contrasted against the dark palette of the shell briar sandblast.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
