Dunhill: Shell Briar (1106) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4348
The venerable English marque doesn't often produce pipes of nosewarmer length. This Group 1 "06" Pot, though, is perfect for collectors seeking a more compact Dunhill, one that's easily clenched and suited well to slipping in a pocket when one doesn't have a travel pipe bag on hand. It's under five inches in length yet still does well to exemplify the shape's characteristic proportions — the bowl more squat and stout through the heel than the traditional Billiard. The spot on proportions, then, belie the piece's overall size (or lack thereof) in pictures. Dressed here in the dark-stained Shell Briar sandblast, it has the potential to be a daily, workhorse pipe, the rustic finish hiding any beauty marks the stummel might pick up over the years.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
