Dunhill: Bruyere (5202) (2017)
Product Number: 002-015-4372
About the only briar shape more classic than the straight Billiard is the bent Billiard, so it's always fitting to come across a Dunhill's famous "02" iteration. This example boasts the English marque's revered shaping style — White Spot renditions of classic shapes often considered the archetypal versions and looked to by numerous artisan carvers for standards of proportions and line. Here in Group 5 size, this is a larger example, yet it doesn't lack sinuous gesture and a firm presence, paired here to a slender saddle stem.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.-Truett Smith
