Dunhill: Cumberland (5109) (2019)

Product Number: 002-015-4378

Dunhill is known for its classic shapes, and they don't get much more classic than the Canadian. A low transition helps display the proud, upright bowl to fine effect, rising from the oval shank with the precise bowl curvature we expect from a pipe of Dunhill's pedigree. That shank is long, as expected from the shape, but it's considerably more stout in this rendition, lending the profile added muscularity. The stem is abbreviated and tapers suddenly from the shank junction, and the smooth texture and warm hue of the stem are echoed by the smooth-polished rim for a handsome aesthetic balance.

When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
