Dunhill: Zodiac Pipe 2020 Shell Briar (3407) (101/218)

Product Number: 002-015-4390

The Chinese calendar runs on a 12-year cycle, designated by 12 different animals of the Zodiac. Since 2011, Dunhill has celebrated Chinese New Year with a special Zodiac pipe, featuring a singular shape with accents that depict that year's animal. For 2020, the cycle start anew with the Year of the Rat, and the White Spot here presents their iconic "07" Prince shape. It's fitted with a sterling silver band, etched with the image of a rat, and each piece is serialized, with this one being 101/218. However, though stamped out of 218, the series actually only features 177 pipes — each number containing the numeral "4" having been skipped since it's considered unlucky in Chinese numerology. This piece comes complete with a letter of authenticity and a leather travel bag, also emblazoned with the year's Zodiac.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
