Dunhill: Bruyere Quaint Churchwarden with Bamboo (4) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4397
Bamboo-adorned pipes began during a time when briar was scarce: WWII and the years immediately after. Not only did bamboo save on briar, it played off of preexisting fashions — the term "whangee" had already long been in use for bamboo canes (like those used by Charlie Chaplin in his role as the Tramp) and umbrellas, and even cigarette holders made by Dunhill themselves. The idea not only stuck around long after it had been put to use for the sake of practicality, it positively thrived. Dunhill's bamboo-adorned pipes became affectionately know as "Whangees," promoting a slightly organic aesthetic that departs from the more austere English style the marque is famous for.
This particular Dunhill Whangee Churchwarden is presented here as part of the Quaint series, a line exclusively reserved for non-standard forms that don't necessarily align with the marque's standard shape chart. The bowl itself resembles an Acorn/Pickaxe shape in profile, subtly tapering down toward the slightly pointed heel spur below. Unlike most Dunhill Churchwardens that extend the shape's length through the stem, this offering's length is extended through five pale knuckles of bamboo before meeting the abbreviated, downturned mouthpiece. The bowl is rendered in hearty Group 4 proportions, tastefully dressed in the rich ruby tones of the Bruyere finish which allows the bamboo to garner more visual prominence.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.- Jeffery Sitts
