Dunhill: Collector Ring Grain Bent Dublin with Horn (HT) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4407
This blast is deep and craggy, circling the bowl with well-defined growth rings and well deserving its heralded Ring Grain designation. It offers a tactile and visual experience nearly equal to its potential for tobacco experiences. Ring Grains are rare occasions meriting celebration, and we've not seen one before now in the Dublin shape and Collector series. This piece offers a dark horn military mount for ease and safety of disassembly even when the pipe is warm. The push-style stem offers a counterbalancing curvature for the line of the underside of the stummel in profile and tapers in lengthy fashion to the lip button. The rim is broad and speckled with tactile birdseye, and is scalloped slightly along the shank axis while an inverse scallop comprises its surface longitudinally. It's a large pipe with plenty of length and sinuous gesture, and in a rare configuration with rare grain and made by a marque that specializes in rarity.
Having earned the English marque's prestigious Ring Grain designation, this Dunhill piece wears a particularly choice iteration of the Shell Briar sandblast — displaying stunning waves of ring grain across the stummel. The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.- Chuck Stanion
