Dunhill: Shell Briar with Silver (4102) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4413
Dunhill's "02" bent Billiard is widely considered the archetypal rendition of the form, and the English marque rarely departs from such standards. This Group 4 example, while entirely traditional and classic, does differ slightly from other "02" renditions I've seen: Most notably, the heel extends just a touch into the bottom of the shank, and said shank is abbreviated a hair, compensated for by the slight extra length of stem. Such design cues lend the bowl more poise and also add sleekness to the S-curve in profile, and furthermore, this particular Shell Briar example bears the addition of a sterling silver accent band for regal flash and eye-catching appeal.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
