Dunhill: Bruyere (3204) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4455
Both Dunhill's "17" and "04" shape numbers refer to straight Bulldog designs, complete with diamond shanks and tapered rims, defined by either a crisp beadline or more subtle ridgeline. Where the designs differ is in their height — the "17" being considerably more squat and low-set than the taller "04." This particular Group 3 rendition of the "04" is a trim, lightweight take on the classic shape, the bowl slightly canted in its orientation. Said bowl features a pair of crisp, yet subtle beadlines, and it's all dressed in the glossy, ruby-toned Bruyere finish.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.- Jeffery Sitts
