Dunhill: Shell Briar with Horn (3108) (2018)
Product Number: 002-015-4501
Dunhill's "08" shape comes with either the diamond shank of a Bulldog or the Rhodesian's rounded one. The former is offered here for a classic, masculine style. In Group 3 proportions, the form is of convenient size, the squat bowl here marked by a subtle ridgeline beneath the rim's taper. It's fitted with a creamy horn mount, the organic medium shaped to perfectly align with the shank's ridgelines while also contrasting against the jet-black stain of the Shell Briar finish.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
