Dunhill: Shell Briar (4412) (2017)
Product Number: 002-015-4507
This "12" bent Chimney from Dunhill is rendered in Group 4 size, with a tall, slender, albeit deeply chambered bowl paired to a lengthy shank and stem combination, for a pleasant balance. Presenting a "check mark" silhouette, this pipe wears the dark, refined finish of the Shell Briar sandblast, presenting some fine grain striations and plenty of textural presence.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Angela Robertson
