Dunhill: Namiki Quail Billiard (84/100)
Product Number: 002-015-4520
Dunhill's association with the Japanese company Namiki dates back to the 1920s during the height of the Art Deco movement. The collaboration initially began as an experiment with exquisite Japanese lacquer being applied to the Dunhill's smoking accessories and writing instruments, most notably using Maki-e. It's a painstaking process of intense detailing and is a traditional Japanese art-form which is over 5,000 years old.
Here in Dunhill's special Namiki series, artisans Mr. Michifumi Kawaguchi and Mr. Yutaka Sato handmade each pipe over a 14-month period, employing complex techniques and an elaborate refinement of the ornamentation. Starting with a base of briar, the pipe is layered first using Urushi, a lacquer, with details added using powdered gold and other precious materials, creating the image on the pipe. More layers of lacquer are added and are allowed to harden before being burnished to reveal the beautiful image beneath. The result is this stunning piece of functional art, featuring the image of a quail at the fore of the pipe, a jet-black lacquered base, and gold-plated accent band at the shank-end.
The pipe itself is a Group 4 "03" Billiard with each pipe within the limited edition series being paired to a tapered, vulcanite mouthpiece and accented by a gold-plated brass band for a touch of additional flash. Limited to only 100 pieces worldwide, this particular piece is serialized as number 84 and is signed by master Yutaka. This a must-have piece for any devoted Dunhill collector, especially considering that no additional Namiki pipes are planned to be created in the coming years.- Jeffery Sitts
