Dunhill: Bruyere (5109) (2018)

Product Number: 002-015-4542

Dunhill is known for its classic shapes, and they don't get much more classic than the Canadian. A low transition helps display the proud, upright bowl to fine effect, rising from the oval shank with the precise bowl curvature we expect from a pipe of Dunhill's pedigree. That shank is long, as expected from the shape, but it's considerably more stout in this larger, Group 5 rendition, lending the profile added muscularity. The stem is abbreviated and tapers suddenly from the transition, and the smooth texture and warm hue of the stem are echoed by the smooth-polished stummel for a handsome aesthetic balance.

The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.
