Dunhill: Bruyere (5226) (2017)
Product Number: 002-015-4543
Dunhill's "26" Hungarian is a take on the Oom Paul that's often seen in one of two iterations. Both are fully bent pipes, but the first is a more cylindrical style, the bowl rising upright from a firm, stretched heel. The second version, seen here, takes a more Egg-like approach, the bowl rounded and tapered to the rim, with the heel more curved yet still hearty and substantial. In this particular Group 4 version, the boldly bent classic takes well to the Bruyere finish, exuding the reserved classicism of vintage English pipes.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.-Truett Smith
