Dunhill: Shell Briar (5108) (2007)
Product Number: 002-015-4575
An archetypal rendition of the classic form, Dunhill's "08" bent Bulldog features the shape's rigid diamond shank and tapered bowl, the hard lines and crisp taper contrasting against the silhouette's genteel curves and the supple heel. In Group 5 size, this example is on the larger, more deeply chambered side, here dressed in the richly textured, dark-stained sandblast of the Shell Briar finish, offering a reserved and traditional aesthetic that still retains a good deal of formal elegance.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
