Dunhill: Collector Shilling Bent Billiard (HT) (XL) (2017)
Product Number: 002-015-4584
Dunhill's Collector series consists of hand-carved pipes that are more individually designed compared to the English marque's standard shape chart. The line showcases Dunhill's more creative side, similar to the Quaint series, and benefits from an entirely handmade approach which is denoted by the "HT" stamp, meaning the pipe was hand-turned. This bent Billiard is once such piece and is certainly deserving of its "XL" designation as it's on par with many of Dunhill's Group 6 or 800-series pipes and houses an appropriately deep chamber to match its massive size while still remaining remarkably lightweight.
What further sets this offering apart from other Collector pieces is that it earned Dunhill's prestigious "Shilling" designation. Much like the marque's "Ring Grain" stamp, the Shilling appellation is reserved for pipes that display exceptional sandblasted grain. Originally introduced in 1995, the Shilling is named for the silver coin formerly used in England as the concentric display of ring grain resembles a stack of shillings. Where Ring Grain pieces feature a dark stain and black stem, Shilling pipes, like this particular example, wear finishes similar to the firm's Cumberland and County series, fitted with cumberland stems. The rim is smooth and stained a warm walnut hue, which pairs handsomely with the rest of the stummel's coloration as well as the brindled vulcanite mouthpiece. It's a stellar piece that's perfect for fans of larger pipes or Dunhill collectors seeking out a truly unique, one of a kind design.- Jeffery Sitts
