Dunhill: Chestnut (1105) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4610
A classic straight Dublin, Dunhill's "05" is a straightforward take on the pipe chart standard form. Sleek and streamlined, the shank and tapered stem combination make for an arrow-straight design, with the flaring bowl poised up front. This piece, however, features a flaring, cumberland mount at the shank end, echoing the bowl's shaping and adding accenting curves in profile. In Group 1 proportions, the long profile offers a unique aesthetic. It's reminiscent of the traditional Japanese kiseru pipe, or at least an English iteration of it, the bowl rather diminutive in relation to the shank and stem (though not nearly as drastic as the kiseru).
A sibling to the Cumberland, Dunhill's Chestnut finish was inaugurated in 1983 to commemorate the closing of the Cumberland Rd. warehouse for which the Cumberland finish was named. Like the Cumberland, pipes in the Chestnut line wear the same dark, smoky stain and are fitted to stems of cumberland but feature a silky smooth, glossy finish compared to the Cumberland's rugged sandblast.-Truett Smith
