Dunhill: Shell Briar with Horn (3101) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4616
This Group 3 iteration of Dunhill's "01" straight Apple is a pleasantly plump, balanced take on the traditional form with the bowl's breadth almost identical to its height. Despite its smaller proportions, there's still enough chamber tucked away inside to ensure a respectably lengthy, relaxing smoke. Aesthetically, this example is also one of the most gorgeous pieces I've personally come across from the legendary English marque. I already have a soft spot for shape chart standards and to see one dressed in the iconic Shell Briar sandblast really grabbed my attention. This remarkable example is made even more striking through the addition of a horn mount, with its creamy color pairing beautifully with the dark sandblast.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.- Jeffery Sitts
