Dunhill: Bruyere (3405) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4678
The second number in Dunhill's four-digit system denotes the stem style, and in this case of this "05" Dublin that stem is the "4" — a slightly curved, Prince-like mouthpiece that lends comfortable balance and elegant poise. The shank, however, remains straight, causing the bowl to tilt slightly forward. It's a unique rendition from the classic English workshop made all the more so by the dramatically flared vulcanite mount at the shank end.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.-Truett Smith
