Dunhill: Bruyere Quaint Bent Billiard (5) (2018)

Product Number: 002-015-4685

Dunhill's standard bent Billiard design is designated by the "02" shape number, and this Quaint rendition drifts slightly from that recognizable archetype. The shank here is oval instead of circular in cross section, making for a more slender stance in profile that draws focus to the bowl — which is rendered in quite massive Group 5 size. Furthermore, the transition isn't angled, the form's bend realized only by the stem's slight downturn, and the visual dominance of the bowl coupled with its rather firm heel lends this piece a certain Italian neoclassic flair compared to The White Spot's typically more balanced, classic proportions.

The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.
