Dunhill: Collector Shell Briar Bent Pot (HT) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4747
Dunhill's Collector series consists of hand-carved pipes that are more individually designed compared to the English marque's standard shape chart. The line showcases Dunhill's more creative side, similar to the Quaint series, and benefits from an entirely handmade approach which is denoted by the "HT" stamp, meaning the pipe was hand-turned. This bent Pot is one such piece, its bowl urging forward from out of the stout shank with the stem's subtle downturn balancing the profile. The bowl itself is traditionally shaped for the most part, displaying the breadth and stoutness typically associated with the Pot shape but the overall design is one you won't find in Dunhill's standard production. Finished in the dark, well-textured Shell Briar sandblast, undulating grain climbs the bowl's flanks before meeting the smooth, mahogany-stained rim, offering a hint of contrast and a classy color palette.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.- Jeffery Sitts
