Dunhill: Shell Briar with Silver Army Mount (2102)
Product Number: 002-015-4763
One of the most iconic pipe designs, the bent Billiard has been a mainstay on the classic shape chart since pipes first started being carved from briar. Dunhill is known for its traditional realization of classics, and for many collectors and pipe smokers, the English marque's "02" bent Billiard is considered the archetypal rendition to which all others are compared. Here, in Group 2 size, it's fit for any occasion — fitting into a pocket while also comfortably clenched hands-free. This particular example is made even more appealing by a sterling silver army mount — a rare accoutrement from The White Spot. The metal fitment shank end both adds regal flash to the color palette while also adding durable reinforcement that allow the stem to be removed even while the pipe is still warm.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
