Dunhill: Shell Briar with Silver (3122) (2020)

Product Number: 002-015-4807

The colorful, brindled vulcanite stem adorning this Poker slightly departs from Dunhill's more reserved pieces, resulting in this pipe's limited-edition status. Rendered in Group 3 size, this "22" features the classic form's cylindrical bowl with its flattened heel enabling it to sit sturdily upright, while an arrow-straight shank-and-stem combination follows behind. Accented by an ornately designed, bright silver band that lightens the composition and lends further elegance, perhaps the most eye-catching aspect of this collectible piece is the vulcanite stem's ink and grey hues. The brindled colors, while somewhat subdued, mark quite a deviation from the normal hues associated with the venerated English marque and contrasts the dark stain of the Shell Briar finish.

The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
