Dunhill: Ring Grain with Silver (3109) (2020) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-015-4813

Dunhill's "09" Canadian always seems to scale effortlessly across the marque's various Group sizes, but I find that Group 3 proportions are the perfect middle ground for such a classic design. It's not as petite as Group 1 or 2 but not overly muscular like Group 5 or 6 sized briars, appealing to anyone who prefers classically inclined shaping cues with just enough substance lent to the bowl. Said bowl sits poised and upright at the end of the elongated, oval shank, which features a bright band of sterling silver at its end. The precious metal is followed by a hand-cut, brindled vulcanite stem, its sand and ink hues offering a different color palette than the traditional cumberland mouthpieces Dunhill typically uses. The Shell Briar sandblast is particularly noteworthy on this piece and rightfully earned The White Spot's distinguished Ring Grain designation. A captivating array of undulating grain surrounds the bowl's flanks, offering an abundance of craggy texture that endlessly fascinating in hand./p>

Having earned the English marque's prestigious Ring Grain designation, this Dunhill piece wears a particularly choice iteration of the Shell Briar sandblast — displaying stunning waves of ring grain across the stummel. The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.
