Dunhill: Bruyere (3126) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-4942
Most call Dunhill's "26" shape an Oom Paul, but the English marque refers to the tall, deeply bent shape as a Hungarian. Whichever name you give the pipe, it promises a deep tobacco chamber, and this Group 5 size rendition does not disappoint. The steeply upswept shank that defines the shape culminates here in a jet black, vulcanite mount, providing a pleasant visual transition to the bent tapered stem. Dressed in Dunhill's Bruyere finish, this piece is just as regal in appearance as it is bold in posture.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.-Joel Balyeat
