Dunhill: Shell Briar (4212) (2017)
Product Number: 002-015-5021
A classic English Stack in moderate, Group-4 size and topped with an elongated saddle stem, this rendition of Dunhill's "12" shape is not a combination we see often from the English marque. The arrangement is both classical and elegant, the saddle stem accentuating the bowl's height which, while being taller than the typical Billiard, still remains lightweight and manageable as a Group 4. The seldom-seen variation is finished here in the craggy, extra dark sandblast of the Shell Briar line, producing an array of rippling growth rings climbing the bowl on all flanks.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.- Andrew Wike
