Dunhill: Cumberland (3124) (2018)
Product Number: 002-015-5054
Dunhill's "24" design is a traditional take on the classic Foursquare, complete with a neat faceted arrangement around the bowl as well as a paneled shank and a flattened underside that enables it to sit stably. It's a design which appears with much frequency in Group 4 size and above, making this Group-3 rendition a rarer version that offers lightweight appeal and a svelte disposition amid the shape's architectural structure. It's finished here in the Cumberland line's ruddy sandblast with its namesake stem of brindled vulcanite, making for pipe that perfectly blends ruggedness and elegance.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."-Truett Smith
