Dunhill: Bruyere (5128) (2015)
Product Number: 002-015-5158
A shape rarely seen in modern pipe production, this "28" Diplomat from Dunhill is a Prince and Author variant. In Group 5 size, the squat, rounded bowl is plump in hand. While the oval shank is balanced proportionally to the bowl, it's outpaced by the arcing oval shank and stem, its downturn gracefully offsetting the stern disposition of the stummel. Dressed in the smoky Bruyere finish, the bowl's broad sides are adorned with constellations of birdseye, flashing in just the right light. A perfect pipe for those looking for a not-often-rendered shape.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.--Davin Hylton
