Dunhill: Bruyere Quaint Billiard (3) (2019)

Product Number: 002-015-5200

Dunhill's Quaint series never ceases to surprise me, as just when I think I've seen everything it has to offer in its portfolio of non-standard shapes, something new emerges that proves the English marque always has more to give. This Group 3 Billiard features a lithe, svelte construction that balances a proud bowl on the end of a sleek, paneled shank and stem combination, providing a bit of rigid structure to an otherwise gentle, soft profile. The bowl is round, as per a usual Billiard, instead of paneled, and the transition serves to merge soft and solid, a sweeping upturn that allows the ridges on the shank to flow into the bowl. The heel, on the other hand, is flat, allowing for stable sitting, and the deep auburn hues of the Bruyere finish reveal a handsome grain structure throughout.

The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.
