Dunhill: Bruyere (4257) (2019)

Product Number: 002-015-5203

The "57" is a shape rarely made by Dunhill, and it's difficult to see why, as the jaunty shape of this bent Dublin Sitter is nothing short of charming, looking as if its crossing into the territory of a Cherrywood. The squat bowl is possessed of a slight forward cant, and the bowl's gradual flare reaches a supple waistline right in its middle, though the rim is still more inflated than the heel. The transition is sharp and acute, angling the shank upward, the saddle stem erupting from it downturned at the bit to ensure a comfortable smoking posture. Dressed in Dunhill's Bruyere finish, this piece displays a lovely cross grain with birdseye on both flanks, all highlighted in a deep auburn stain.

The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.
