Dunhill: Cumberland Quaint Bent Billiard (3) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-5209
Dunhill's Quaint series denotes pipes that fall outside of their standard shape chart, often times making for highly collectible, highly unique designs. This bent Billiard is one such example, pairing a trimmer, softer Billiard bowl — reminiscent of a Chimney — to a slender shank-and-stem combination for quite the willowy profile. The slanted rim contrasts against the shape's horizontal axis and gives the bowl a bit of forward momentum, gesturing outward slightly, while out back, the gently flared shank gives way to the arc of the tapered stem, creating a dynamic balance between both ends of the pipe. With the richly textured Cumberland sandblast accentuating the stummel's grain and leaving plenty of stimulating texture, this piece is handsomely rendered, the brindled vulcanite stem a perfect complement.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."--Davin Hylton
