Dunhill: Bruyere (4106) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-5241
Rendered in Group 4 size, this "06" Pot from Dunhill is a stout and muscular shape, with the bowl's firm heel and thick walls rendering a dense, yet lightweight, presence in hand. The bowl sits stoically at the front of the pipe, while the shank end features a military mount of black vulcanite which flares out to a broad, flat disc that balances out some of the bowl's robust proportions in profile. The military mount adds stability to the tapered tenon and enables the piece to be easily broken down, even when hot. The jet-black of the mount and stem make for a sleek uniformity out back that complements the stummel's earth tones. Dressed in the dark, smoky Bruyere finish, the cross grain and fields of birdseye are shrouded until the light strikes the stummel at just the right angle.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.--Davin Hylton
