Dunhill: Cumberland (4128) (2018) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-5247
Presented in fairly hearty Group 4 size, this "28" is a rarity in terms of design, even for a marque as traditional as Dunhill, as it boasts the Diplomat shape. The Diplomat is an Author variant, featuring a broad, rotund bowl paired to an oval shank and bent stem. A plump fit in hand, the bowl has a smooth rim that contrasts nicely with the rich texture of the Cumberland sandblast. The brindled vulcanite stem compliments the darkened sandblast, tapering off the shank at a slight upturned angle before arcing downwards into a elegant bend. A unique design beautifully rendered, this pipe is sure to endear itself to the right collector.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."--Davin Hylton
