Dunhill: Bruyere with Horn (5113) (2020)
Product Number: 002-015-5305
Dunhill's "13" bent Apple isn't a particularly unique sight, though it is rarer to see it in such a large, Group 5 size. When fashioned in such size, the bowl typically takes a different form than in smaller Group sizes: Instead of squat and broad, this rendition is tall and slender, still rounded in Apple fashion but exhibiting a more Egg-like stance. It offers considerably more chamber depth, and this pipe is further elevated by a military mount of creamy horn, contrasting the smoky, rich stain of the Bruyere finish.
The Bruyere was Alfred Dunhill's original finish upon launching his brand of premium pipes and smoking accessories and was the only Dunhill finish from 1910 until 1917. Even after the addition of other finishes, the Bruyere maintained a high level of popularity, becoming synonymous with what is thought of, even today, as the quintessential pipe. To achieve the iconic, ruby hue and saturation, a skilled craftsman painstakingly layers particular stains in a precise manner, then meticulously polishes the pipe to a high luster. The final result is, simply put, timeless.-Truett Smith
