Dunhill: Cumberland (1106) (2019)
Product Number: 002-015-5312
This is quite the interesting piece from Dunhill, not just for its diminutive Group 1 size, but for its stem arrangement as, instead of utilizing their traditional, domed military mount, the marque has instead opted for a flared one. This "06" pot is squat and stout for its size, straightforward in its utility and elevated by its lines, with the flared portion of cumberland as a mount acting to draw one's attention more toward the transition as opposed to the bowl. Incredibly charming with its trim shank and lengthy stem arrangement, the Cumberland finish dressing this pipe brings out a lovely grain and ensures textural and visual intrigue for years to come.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."-John McElheny
