Dunhill: Shell Briar (4145) (2021)
Product Number: 002-015-5421
Referred to as the "Don" shape, Dunhill's "45" design is a specific rendition of the Poker that has gained a considerable following over the decades. Like the traditional Poker, Dunhill's Don features a slightly canted, cylindrical, and sturdy-sitting bowl with a raised transition. The stem of the Don, however, is longer and slightly bent, fitting mount-style into the abbreviated shank. The collectible shape is found here in the timeless aesthetic of the Shell Briar sandblast.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
