Dunhill: Shell Briar (5103) (2014) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-015-5429
The rim of this "03" Billiard reveals Alfred Dunhill's innovative "windshield" design, pioneered to block the wind when smoking a pipe in old, open-air automobiles. The shaping cue is most often rendered on the modern stage in The White Spot's "12" Stack shape, but here it elevates this standard Billiard. Robustly proportioned in Group 5 size, this pipe is hearty in hand and offers plenty of canvas on which to appreciate the Shell Briar's textured sandblast.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipesmoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar. With its dark, reserved color palette and delightful texture, it's no surprise that it's still wildly popular over a century later.-Truett Smith
